New study shows how prebiotics can improve your microbiome and brain health

We know many of you love finding out the latest news on gut health, and as always, when there is prebiotic news to share, we want to help you be the first to hear it!

If you are here, we know you already know that gut health is an all-important part of your overall wellness, but did you know that it now is starting to be shown in scientific studies to actually impact your memory!?

As new research emerges, health professionals continue to understand the science behind the highly topical area of gut-health, deciphering the connection between diet, our digestive system, the cascading impacts on our emotions, the ‘gut feeling’ we experience and more recently, its connection to brain health.

As we grow older, sadly our bodies, and everything inside them naturally begin to functionally decline, including the existing bacteria inside our digestive tract.

A recent study explored the potential to control the ageing of our gut bacteria during our middle-ages by using diet as the keystone to make a positive difference in our later years of life. To date, majority of controlled studies have been conducted in mice subjects, yielding promising results.

Compared to subjects eating a normal diet, those who ate a diet rich in foods containing a prebiotic called inulin (yes, one of the fiber types found inside the Daily Uplifter)  were found to stimulate an increase in growth and diversity of the good bacteria. YES!

Those eating prebiotic-containing foods had bacterial growth which behaved similar to that of younger cohorts and the subjects also displayed improvements in cognitive tests, suggesting the potential to improve brain and cognitive aging by the inclusion of more prebiotic-rich foods in our diets.

There are many foods that are a great source of prebiotics containing inulin. In their raw form, these include Jerusalem artichoke, chicory root, asparagus, garlic and onion as well as now in some products such as our Uplift Food Daily Uplifter!
